NICHE: WORK FROM HOME JOBS ARE FADING
Companies are demanding employees return to in-office (yep, goodbye pandemic-era remote work policies). High-paying jobs site Ladders found remote and hybrid jobs paying over $250,000 plummeted by 95% altogether, and 60% alone in the last year. It turns out that managers preferring in-person supervision and hold the belief that office presence fosters innovation, cohesion, and mentorship. Even with this data, studies show that employees are willing to take pay cuts for the work-from-home flexibility!
LIFESTYLE: MILLENNIALS EXPLAIN LIVING ALONE
Living alone as a younger worker has become more popular in recent decades, with 10.5% of millennials living solo in 2022. This trend may be due to delayed marriage and a sense of accomplishment from affording solo living. However, living alone incurs a "singles tax," with Zillow estimating over $7,000 more in annual housing costs for single renters. When living with someone, you can split groceries and other expenses. The positive side of living alone is having privacy and being able to completely have your own space.
BUSINESS: ASICS STOCK CATCHES FIRE
The 75-year-old Japanese sneaker brand, Asics, is experiencing a major revival. Its stock has quadrupled in the last 2 years, with revenue up 14% and operating profit up 53% in the latest quarter alone. The pandemic definitely fueled demand for Asics' comfortable running shoes as more people picked up running as a hobby. While traditionally known for performance running gear, some of Asics' old designs have become trendy fashion symbols among youth embracing the "ugly shoe" aesthetic (kind of like Crocs). Asics has cultivated a loyal running community through apps, race registrations, and a whopping 15 million member loyalty program.
"A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara is a powerful, emotionally intense novel that follows the lives of four college friendsāJude, Willem, Malcolm, and JBāas they navigate their careers and relationships in New York City. The story gradually centers on Jude, a brilliant lawyer whose past is slowly revealed.
The novel delves deeply into themes of trauma, abuse, and its lasting psychological impact. Jude's backstory exposes a disturbing childhood that shapes his adult life in profound ways. Despite the darkness, Yanagihara explores the transformative power of love and friendship.
ON DISCIPLINE: āDiscipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.ā - ABRAHAM LINCOLN
People who achieve success or a goal arenāt smarter, theyāre disciplined. Discipline involves the ability to delay immediate gratification for the sake of something more significant in the future. It also requires prioritizing your goals first and foremost which involves self-control.
